The best things in life are free camping
| November 22
Whether you’re sleeping under the stars, under the canvas or pulling up in your caravan or campervan, you’re never short on stellar spots with which to find a shady tree and wait for your billy to boil. Here are some of the highlights:
FROG’S HOLLOW, Lake Cargelligo
This free camping spot enjoys absolute lake frontage – which might just explain its popularity especially during the summer months and holidays. A must-visit spot for fishing, bird watching and boating/skiing enthusiasts. Sunrise over the water is magical.
DEAD MAN’S POINT, Lake Cargelligo
An alternative option if Frog’s Hollow is overflowing with campers, this spot is quieter – a few clicks from the town but still easily accessible along the foreshore pathway. It’s a lovely lakeside spot to relax and unwind, with an eco toilet onsite.
GUM BEND LAKE, Condobolin
The ultimate in free camping experiences, this location offers up to 14 nights of blissful lakeside space – with access to an amenities block (showers/toilets), BBQs, picnic tables, boat ramp, walking path around the lake, playground, fitness equipment and of course, the lake itself. Located approximately 3km from the town, it’s an ideal base and home to stunning sunsets.
KIACATOO WEIR
Situated a short drive from Condobolin along the Lachlan Valley Way (near the King’s Grave historic site), this quiet spot alongside one of the river’s man-made weirs is suitable for self-contained vehicles only. There are plenty of shady spots and it’s dog-friendly and campfire friendly (check seasonal conditions) for a true outback experience!
SMALLER TOWNS
Exploring the smaller towns of the region can be made easier by designated free camping spots (with dogs permitted on leads). These include Pioneer Park in Tullibigeal, Burcher Camping Grounds, behind the Hotel in Fifield and across from the Rabbit Trap Hotel in Albert. In all cases, the local hotel is your best spot for getting fed and watered – and to sample the local hospitality. They might even share a story or two, also free!
Free dump points are located at caravan parks in Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo and Tottenham, with an additional roadside point at Lake Cargelligo.
Stay in Lachlan Shire, NSW, for outback allure, historical richness, cultural immersion, adventurous escapades, and captivating stargazing beneath pristine skies.
Witness Utes in the Paddock, embrace Wiradjuri heritage, explore vast landscapes, and stargaze under pristine skies.
Indulge in Lachlan Shire, savor outback flavors, sip local wines, and relish warm hospitality at charming eateries amid stunning vistas.
